First gay marriages in Washington and Ellen attacked
This past Sunday the first same sex marriages were performed in the state of Washington. Congragulations to those couples who have just married, and to those who will soon be married. In less than a month, same sex couples in Maine and Maryland will join them.
As you might already know, Ellen DeGeneras is a spokesperson for J.C. Penny and a lesbian. She has a cutesy commercial that features her talking with elves. The anti-gay organization One Million Moms (which nowhere has one million actual mom supporters) is outraged because of it. Well, though they now say they are moving on, they have had a boycott with J.C. Penny because of its' using Ellen (who I will not refer to her as just Ellen because everyone else does) in their ads. In fact they wrote on their website, "JCP has made their choice to offend a huge majority of their customers again."
No, they haven't. JCP and other companies such as Starbucks know that the vast majority of their customers don't fear and detest gays, especially someone like Ellen. Yes, to many Americans Christmas has a deeply religious significance to them. But because it does does not mean they must hate all gays like this organization does. Groups like this are scared because they are losing. The vast majority of those under 30 favor marriage equality. The Republican party is starting to shift from using gay marriage to win votes, to being afraid to bring it up to drive away votes. The fear and bigotry of organizations like is losing any hold it once had.
