Food Crisis? What? Where?

Food Crisis? What? Where?

There may be an escalation in world food prices but on the face of it there is no shortage of either food stuff or the desire to eat in ordinary American people that I have come across in my recent visit. Although this is my umpteenth visit, I remain baffled at the idea and the sight of the large single-person helpings - whether dishes or drinks. Snacking, munching food at all times seems to be a national hobby, not to mention the level of obesity that one comes across.

Rumana Husain, I will admit you are correct and ahead of schedule at the same time on your story.

How is that possible to say that in these times America has not the food - it does and it is available to those with the ability to pay for it and this is really becoming something of question to many Americans in these times. Unemployment in some areas of the country is and has been beyond what the government is tell in there reports to the public and as a result once these unemployment benefits are used or run out, these individuals and families may not have any source of income at all. The dependancy upon other family member near and far has grown along with friends, neighbors, church's and other charitable organization. While at the same time the dependency upon food stamps, WIC and welfare in general has increased.

For those that still can not find work, used up their unemployment and are not eligible for benefits, it comes down to priorities (note: not everyones priorities are as follows); mortgage or rent (shelter), utilities, bills, then food and these are people who are able and wiling to do whatever they can for work or whatever to make money to provide for their families or themselves.

I realize that the picture a paint above is not completely for the whole of America and has (in my belief) only started and will be on the increase as the seasons change and the weather get colder when things, will only get worse with the priority going to have warmth to stay alive.

So yes there is food and some are still eating good and enjoying the snacks, it will not be so for long as more and more will not be able to provide or be able to afford the higher costs that will be coming in the not too far off future. Its a grime picture and not one I  want to have happen and hopefully will not, yet in the hard cold reality of America today it has already started.

Thank you everchanging for the insight. i feel to quote you from 'About Everchanging' seems appropriate here: "everchanging is what life is, was and will be, because life is ever changing and always will be!' nevertheless, americans need to pause in their tracks and think about not only their eating habits but also their wasteful ones as it impacts the whole world.

Rumana, Thanks for your insight. It would be great if you could write longer piece on this and also use some stories using highlighter, Cheers
