Daniel Craig To Play Mikael Bloomkvist In Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

It looks like Daniel Craig is turning in his Walter PPK for a Apple Macbook, trading in his role as spy in the James Bond series, for that of investigative journalist, Mikael Bloomkvist in Stieg Larsson's popular suspense thriller, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

What was rumored is now confirmed Daniel Craig has officially signed up for the English language version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Meanwhile, the fate of long running James Bond series is in limbo. MGM, the studio behind James Bond, is in financial trouble and has been up for sale since November.

Bond 23, as it's known, was supposed to go into production later this year with director Sam Mendes at the helm. But producers postponed the film, citing the financial uncertainty of MGM, which was forced to declare bankruptcy thanks to some $4 billion in debt, throwing several high-profile pictures, including Bond and The Hobbit, into doubt.

“No franchise can afford to be away from screens for that long anymore,” says a former MGM exec. “You lose too much momentum. Even for Bond, it could be deadly.” Of course, Bond has defied death before — just ask Blofeld — so we’re not counting him out just yet.

Now David Fincher, the director of Fight Club, Se7en, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button will be directing Daniel Craig as Mikael Bloomkvist.

Fincher can focus his attention on casting his heroine, the diminutive hacker Lisbeth Salander. Screen tests for the highly-coveted role are expected to happen this week.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is part of trilogy. The other two novel in Stieg Larsson's popular series are The Girl Who Played With Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is scheduled to be released Christmas 2011
