friday march 21

Divine coincidence has led to celebration of four festivals of different major religions of world on the same day in India. Choti Holi (Hindus), Navroz, (Parsis), Good Friday (Christians) and Eid-Ul-Milad (Muslims) have all these religious ceremony on the same day Friday March 21, 2008

Choti Holi the festival of colors that is also opening festival in Hindu calendar falls on the full moon day in the month of spring. In the beginning, Holi regarded, as a festival to celebrate good harvests.

There are several legends and stories behind Holi. A popular legend says it is the day of Holika was burnt in fire on this day. Holi is believed to be ancient festivals of the Aryans as you can find mention in Garud purana, Dashkumar charitra and Shir Sagar. It was famous with the name “Vasantotsav” (festival of spring).Holi festival, celebration begin by performing Holi puja as per Hindu tradition.

Dhuleti, which falls day after Holi Puja, considered the actual festival of colors. On this day Young and old smear each other with dry or water colours and paint each others face which Symbolizes forget all hatred that might have bred in the foregoing year and fill each other’s life with colors and joy then on. There are different egends of Holi in accordance to the myth of the regions.

The most accepted are:

Legends of king Hiranyakashyap: Hiranyakashyapu was the strongest demon of his times, he conquered many gods and the engulfed with haugtiness he ordered every one to worship him Intead of lord Vishnu He had a son named Pralhad, who was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. However, Pralhad disobeyed his father’s order and did not stop worshipping Lord Vishnu.Angered by this he ordered his Sister Holika, (who was blessed with the boon that she will not burn in fire) to sit with Prahlad in the funeral phyre.Holika took Prahlad in her lap and sat on the raging fire. But Prahlad faith in lord Vishnu did not diminish and he kept on chanting lords name.

Pleased with Prahlad’s devotion Lord Vishnu saves his devotee and burns the wrong doer Holika by negating her boon and burning her in the same fire. Since then people collect wood and burn holi fire as mark of allegiance to the lord Vishnu.

Radha -Krishna Holi:

lord Krishna, the prankster and was the creator of many legends for himself. He once asked his mother - why is Radha fair and I am Dark? Mother Yashuda replied to him saying – If you are so much jealous of Radha’s color than go and put dark colors on her and she will also turn dark as you so. Lord Krishna went ahead and did the same. Since then each lover usually puts color on his/her beloved to pay homage to Lord Krishna.

The typical features of Holi is making of variety sweets and savories on the occasion. Gujiya’s” are the famous one, which most of the households indulge in. Christians will be observing a day for mourning (Good Friday) to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, followed by the Easter celebrations on Sunday. Eid-e-Milad, observed by the Muslims, is the birth as well as the death anniversary of Prophet Mohammad Iranis and Parsis, will celebrate Navroz the first day of the Zoroastrian calendar, in a big way. This coincidence stupefies the secular traits India where every religion coexist with each other, respecting each other’s tradition and values not withstanding the fundamentalist action.
