The city of Mobile, Ala., will usher in the New Year in tasty and spectacular fashion with a 600-pound, 1,500-light electronic MoonPie rising over the city at the stroke of midnight, according to a news release issued earlier this week by the Mobile Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau.

In addition, officials from Chattanooga Bakery, the MoonPie Bakery, will serve up the largest MoonPie ever baked — a 60-lb, four-foot-wide, 45,000-calorie banana MoonPie — to members of the public just before midnight.

For those who want their own single-serving-size MoonPie, officials in Mobile say thousands of the individually-wrapped chocolate, graham cracker and marshmallow snacks will be distributed to partygoers.  In addition, Royal Crown Cola (RC Cola) — the traditional soft drink with which to enjoy a MoonPie — will be donating 5,000 cans of RC Cola to the New Year’s celebration.

Proceeds from the sale of commemorative T-shirts and coffee/hot chocolate will go to the local Salvation Army and McKemmie Place, a local shelter for homeless women.  Click here to visit the MoonPie homepage (yes, there is one!).
