With friends like these ... (On the politics of the people behind Facebook)

I despise Facebook. This enormously successful American business describes itself as "a social utility that connects you with the people around you". But hang on. Why on God's earth would I need a computer to connect with the people around me? Why should my relationships be mediated through the imagination of a bunch of supergeeks in California? What was wrong with the pub?

I read this piece the other day on the paper version of the Guardian and though I should highlight it. I'm not sure how much of it is true and how much of it is speculation, but it's an interesting piece for Facebook users.

Whats wrong with the pub?

I can't smoke in it anymore and have to stand outside in the cold !

generaldecay

Well indeed Vinny! And it's just too miserable to be anywhere near outside these days!

Thank you Vinny. :)

I think it likely that Facebook does much more harm than good.  We are hearing every day about another case of sexual exploitation or assault that was arranged through Facebook.

generaldecay

Through Facebook? I've heard of many of those problems with MySpace but I've yet to hear of 'grooming' through Facebook.

I recommend against poking random strangers at the pub, but it's a great way to remind your friend up at the bar about your order... as for Facebook, it seems to me a data-mining cow waiting to get fattened up, so I avoid almost all of the add-ons.

generaldecay

I avoid ALL of the addons and I've even installed a little Greasemonkey script that hides them for me without me even noticing!

i just "deactivated" my account, apparently you cannot even delete it!

i find it a bit too easy for outsiders to datamine my contacts, i don't like it that anybody can see who my friends are!

generaldecay

Yes, viz, deleting is impossible, I believe. It does make me wonder...

generaldecay

Viz, I have since learned that it's almost impossible to delete your profile from FB. You were right!

generaldecay, a very interesting read! Thanks for posting!

generaldecay

Thank you Rhonda.

I am fascinated by social networking sites and the effects they had on our interactions and lifestyles.

generaldecay

No, not interested.

"Did you know that T.R.'s(NV) grammar is poor ?"

My word, you're rude. And, frankly, your own grammar is rather shoddy.
