New Futurama Episodes on Comedy Central Start on June 24

After a seven-year absence from network television, Futurama returns to television on June 24. After its initial cancellation, Futurama continued to reach fans through sales of straight-to-DVD feature films and box sets of the TV episodes, along with continuous reruns on Comedy Central (and Cartoon Network in Canada). 26 new episodes of Futurama will air on Comedy Central.

Futurama, produced by Simpsons mastermind Matt Groening, ran for four regular seasons, plus a fifth season comprised of the DVD features recut for broadcast after Fox stopped buying new episodes.

Original Futurama Cast

Frye, Leela, Bender, Zoidberg and company are back, and will be voiced by the original cast.

The pop-culture and tech landscapes have changed dramatically since Futurama left the air, though: things like Youtube, Twitter, smartphones, hybrid cars, and a global recession have entered our reality, and are fair game for parody.

Futurama fans will see some familiar faces stuck on top of a rack of skeletons in this first image from the resuscitated series, which returns to television June 24.

Says producer David X. Cohen,

“The DVD movies, due to their long nature, had to put the universe on the line,” he said. “It’s something you have to have in 90 minutes of sci-fi animation, along with slower pacing and more music. But now we can get back to Bender saying mean, funny things.
