NP Rank:
Gay, Gay Hollywood
One of ten recommended LGBT documentaries everyone should see according to author Michael Jones, Communications Director for the Human Rights Program at Harvard Law School, is Gay, Gay Hollywood:
It’s not only a 1980 documentary about the role of LGBT people in film, it’s also a descriptive reflection of the role that LGBT people have played in creating today’s pop culture and cinema world. But quid pro quo, Dr. Lecter. The film industry has also done its part to spotlight the major issues and struggles of the LGBT rights movement.
Also recommended: The Celluoid Closet (1995), For the Bible Tells Me So (2007), Trembling Before G-d (2001), The Times of Harvey Milk (1984), Pursuit of Equality (2007), Freeheld (2007), Transgeneration (2004/2005), Gay Sex in the '70s (2005), and It's Elementary: Talking About Gay Issues in Schools ((1996).

I'm just waiting for the day when they give us back all the manly names they took awayt from us Breeders, like Biff, Lance, Bruce, Butch and Lucky Charms.
Funny there is no mention of "The Boys in the Band" a 1960s classic!

Hi, Barry! Good question, to which I don't have the answer. I am however providing a link to information on "The Boys in the Band" for those who may want additional information. Thanks for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation!

Hi, Barry! I "fell asleep at the wheel" on this one, so to speak:)! The reason "The Boys in the Band" is probably not listed is because it was a play by Crowley written the same year Stonewall occurred and adapted to film, directed by William Friedkin. A DVD Review of "The Boys in the Band". Also, Crowley was interviewed for the documentary "The Celluloid Closet" (1995), available at the source.

Did anyone do a documentary about Merve Griffin's notorious casting couch?

Hi, eastvanray! Good to see you around! I know nothing of "Merv Griffin's notorious casting couch". I did however find a link that provides exact, partial matches to "The Casting Couch". Because you know what you are referencing, perhaps you would like to visit the link and get back! Thanks:)!

My wife worked in Hollywood and it always amazed me how the rest of America had never heard what was what and who was who, and how they got there.
Rock Hudson gay? Everyone in San Francisco knew about it. Nobody called back east then, huh?
Finally, nobody really cares if the actor is gay or straight. That was a very significant step.
The one thing that bothers me is when a woman wants to be called an "actor". That grates on me. As if being paid 200 times what the average man makes in the same time and getting reminded that you are an "actress" is discriminatory.
In Italy there are senators and senatrice, if I remember correctly:. Senators and their female counterparts. Better yet- what if Venus or Aphrodite wanted to be called a "god" instead of a "goddess"?
Something lacking there.
In a patriarchal world, a certain kind of woman actually doesn't realize that she is prejudiced against her own feminity.
Until we overcome that, we will have stuff like that.
