For some time now it has been a running joke on the Internet (as well as on the media) that there is gay subtext in the work of Judd Apatow. Apatow's movies (as a producer and director) usually feature male characters who are open about their feelings towards each other. Sometimes the movie's plot revolves around it. A good example is Superbad in which the two male leads can't say that they'll miss each other in college till the very end of the movie.
Apatow has made it no secret that he reads about himself and his movies. So, could it be that in his latest movie, Pineapple Express he is poking fun at it? For those of you who saw the movie (it was released today) you may have noticed certain scenes that shove the supposed gay subtext in your face. Here's two good examples: early in the film, Dale (Seth Rogen) and Saul (James Franco) are in the woods hiding from drug dealers who are trying to kill them. Saul complains that he is cold, so Dale takes off his jacket and puts it over him. Then, later on in the movie they sit "on top of a tree" and have an intimate discussion about their friendship.
So is Apatow making fun of the supposed subtext or is he actually trying to tell us something? You be the judge.
