Historian Claudio Sanchez-Albornoz concludes that the Spanish civilization is Catholic and other influences.
However others such as the biologists in this case states that Spain have been enriched by 3 historical cultures; Catholic,Jewish and Muslim.
Test conducted by biologists from University of Leicester in England headed by Mark A. Jobling, and the University of Pempeu Fabra headed by Francesc Calafell developed a unique signature of Y chromosome that identify Sephardic Jewish and Muslims comminities in Spain and since Y choromosones are unchanged from father to son, they have found out that in 1492 to 1496 in Spain there were a massive conversion of Jews and Muslims to Catolics.
The question is; would knowing your previous ancestors religion effect your current faith?
Science provides facts and evidence while History provides collectible stories.
History backs up Religions in this case the history of Spain backs up the Catholics, while science proved otherwise.
I have my own opinion on what this means, how about you?

Spain is at the crossroads of many different cultures. The people could be expected to have many ethnic ancestries.

Spain was part of the Roman Empire, followed by the Germanic invasion and the Holy Roman empire of German Nations, then came the Arabic Invasion that held the Jews in high esteem and those Arabs made them self protector of the Jews since the Jews where Persecuted by the Catholic Church especially in the time of the inquisition. As the Holly Roman Empire of German Nation took back a large part of Spain most Jews fled to stay with the Arabs. To this day the King of Morocco does hold in his title, "Protector of the Jews."
