George Lazenby Laments $45 Million Heineken Product-Placement Deal in Skyfall

George Lazenby, the Australian model who kick-started his acting career by playing James Bond in 1969's On Her Majesty's Secret Service, has publicly denounced the $45 million product-placement deal that has today's 007 (that would be Daniel Craig) sipping Heineken instead of a martini.

George Lazenby's major beef: Heineken isn't even that great a beer. Remember, though, that James Bond has had a decades-long romance with Smirnoff, which is the Heineken of vodka. Joames Bond first sipped Smirnoff in Dr. No.

A few thoughts:

  • George Lazenby wasn't as bad a Bond as people seem to think. He was stuck playing Bond in the film where 007 gets married. That's not easy. Lazenby also got a ridiculously frilly shirt (and, to be fair,  a ridiculously awesome ski scene). He also had to take over from Sean Connery. Tough act to follow.
  • Lazenby knows a thing or two about shitty beer: Australia gave us Foster's, Castlemaine XXXX, and, most egregiously, Toohey's New.
  • The rebooted 007 franchise is all about reinvention: it's not a problem that Bond isn't stuck with martinis. I just wish he chose a more... interesting beer.

Imagine drinking beer before a bout of life-or-death secret-agent parkour... a martini may have comparable calories, but it's much lighter in the stomach.
