Gerald Imes: Monique Brother Tells Oprah He Molested His Sister
Gerald Imes Appeared on the April 19, 2010 Edition of the Oprah Winfrey To Ask His Sister Monique For Forgiveness After Molesting Her When They Were Children
Gerald Imes, the brother of Oscar winning actress Monique, told Oprah Winfrey that he molested his sister when they were children and he wants to apologize.
Imes appeared on the April 19, 2010 edition of The Oprah Winfrey Show and told the host that he molested Monique for about a year when he was 13 and she was just seven or eight years old.
Imes said he himself had been the victim of sexual abuse, which drove him to use drugs and alcohol by the age of 11.
"I abused and betrayed the trust of another sibling, my sister, my blood sister," Imes told Winfrey.
He apologized to the actress, saying "I'm sorry, Monique. I'm sorry."
Gerald Imes later added: "Hopefully somewhere, somehow as siblings we can come back together as brother and sister."
Monique, who won Best Supporting Actress Oscar last month for her role in Precious: Based on the Novel Push By Sapphire, has spoken publicly about her abuse in the past.
Monique talked to Essence Magazine about the abuse she suffered at the hands of Gerald Imes.
“He still acts like he doesn’t know what I’m talking about. So screw hurting your feelings. You need to get your feelings hurt, and you need to get some help.”
The Essence article states that Gerald Imes spent 15 years in jail for sexually abusing another person.
Monique has not publicly responded to the Gerald Imes apology. According to Winfrey, the actress did give Oprah her blessing to run the Gerald Imes story.
