In the 1960's with a Cold War, Worldwide Nuclear Armageddon, Cuban Missile Crisis, Space Race and a spate of Spy movies, everything from Man from Uncle to James Bond, fear mongering was everywhere, complete with cities keeping their old World War II air raid sirens in case of Nuclear Attack.
Mel Brooks on the other hand, may have seen the folly of what never came and spawned what would become comedic genius in a bumbling American Spy called "Get Smart" played by comedic actor Don Adams, complete with his ever suffering sidekick Agent 99, played by straight woman Barbara Feldon.
The spy gadgets were innovative, though useless and at times laughable, especially the Cone of Silence, Shoe Phone and other insanely complicated devices, which believe it or not the "Cone of Silence" actually existed according to a story by an ex CIA agent told in an interview in the 70's.
Though Get Smart as a series ran only a few seasons, it left an impression on me as a child in that the "World of KAOS" was indeed a farce, tempered by Maxwell Smarts daring do and incompetence solving the unsolvable through trial and countless errors.
I eagerly await this remake, as Steve Carell, I feel, fills Maxwell Smart's "Shoe Phone" nicely.
Would you believe the comedy makeover should be called Get Action? That's right chief, Get Smart gets rockin' action wise when the spoofing comes to shoving around the inept secret agent.
In the film opening June 20, Steve Carell also plays a more energetic Maxwell Smart, the spy who doesn't know enough to come in from the cold. In Carell's hands Max seems less stunned than the TV show dunce played by Don Adams, but the movie Smart still hasn't found the clue he's looking for.
