Hi René, could you modify your headline? It reads a bit like a commercial post that could sound a bit too close to spam. Thanks!

René, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Will you be offering commentary on this? The Jazzfest is a major, major music event. I'm so glad that this year, we can have a live stream for those who can't make it!

The scheduler is great. I wish our big Blues Fest would do the same thing.

Hope you get to go to many events!

This story would be more newsworthy were it to contextualize the upcoming New Orleans Jazz Festival for a broader audience. As it stands, this is post is exclusively about a commercial service being offered by WWOZ.

I would like to hear more about the festival as a larger cultural event: what artists are performing? where is it being held? how does the festival benefit the city of New Orleans?

Offering further commentary on this issue would make this post truly 'good stuff'.

Wow, Jarrett, I'm sorry if I somehow upset you.

As for advertising/commercial, you already addressed your issue about the headline with Rene, so why should I chew your cabbage  twice?  ;}

I must have missed something in my enthusiasm. I poked around the site--quickly, admittedly--but I didn't see anything that would cost me money, that I had to pay for, which is kind of my definition of "commercial service." Before I sign up for my schedule, could you point me to where it tells me what I have to pay, as I simply can't afford such things?

I believe I asked Rene to contribute more on this. If this is like our big Blues Fest, this appeared to be more of the pre-event announcements. Do you consider this a press release? Also, the link does give us a website that gives a great deal of information about the festival--the things you asked in your very good questions.

As far as Rene posting advertising/commercial spam, I've never seen her do that. She's contributed a great deal of original material, and even flood coverage from her area. Besides, given the amount of cricket spam posted that's gs'd by staff and sometimes promoted by staff, I'm not likely to get bothered by an iconic music festival live stream that in itself is  actual news. On some of those cricket things, because I want to learn more about cricket, I've clicked on  links to watch live streams and have found a charge. Well, I don't want to learn that much!"

Thanks so much for your viewpoint, I always learn something. But, with respect, given precedent from cricket spam and until I'm sure that the link wants us to pay for what they offer, I'm letting my flag stand. I'm sure you'll understand.

Rene, could you please address Jarrett's concern? Is this a commercial link? I think he deserves an answer.

Jarrett, did you look at the site? It has all that you request above and more. It is not a commerical site, it is a non-profit public radio station!

Yes, it offers Brass Passes and other things for the JazzFest, but that is because it is a listener-sponsored station, the founder and sponsor of the JazzFest, and this is one of the ways it funds its operations. Kinda like NPR and Public TV.

There is tons of stuff going on. And people are starting to pour into New Orleans for the JazzFest. Unfortunately there is not as broad a base of local supporters still in the  city, nor as inexpensive one or two week rentals available for out-of-towners.

Another point: has NP policy changed? This total copy-and-paste (no highlight, has received a Good Stuff flag.

At first I was going to give a Good Stuff flag, too, then I realized: this isn't written by the poster. It's from a major news outlet.

This does get complex, doesn't it? :)

Remember Chris Rose has a Plan? Here you can make up your own JazzFest Cubes, or plans for the JazzFest and see who is playing where and on what day. Then print it out.

And you can get Live-Streaming of WWOZ, a non-profit public radio. And I made Up that headline! Not copied it. This is the biggest party in New Orleans next to Mardi Gras. Thousands of musicians, locals and people from all over the world gather to celebrate music and food and togetherness.

I'm not selling anything. This is NOT Spam, Jarrett! WWOZ is the major sponsor for JazzFest and the major promoter for local music and musicians. The Live-stream is FREE! I'm just spreading the joy. Sorry if you object.

This reply took at least half an hour to post. Sorry for the delay and double posting . It was either my internet connect or server problems with NowPublic.

Seems that things are getting better on NowPublic, but... still get the spinning wheel of death when I try to publish, upload or comment.

Hi René,

To clarify, I did not suggest that this was a spam post, I made a suggestion that you could modify your headline, which sounds as though it is promoting a commercial service.

I also recognize that you contribute valuable content to NowPublic. You are a wrangler for the site and I value your contributions.

Although WWOZ is a public radio station, I was simply suggesting that a story on the New Orleans jazz festival, as a whole, would make a better post than a piece focusing exclusively on a streaming-radio service by WWOZ.

In response to PEP's comment about flagging stories that have been exclusively highlighted as 'Good Stuff', it is not something that we encourage on the site. We are working on refining -- and clarifying -- NowPublic's editorial policy in order to address this issue, as we would like to promote, as often as possible, the best original content submitted to the site.

Thanks for your comments. I hope I've addressd your concerns. Please feel free to contact me directly for anything further.

Jarrett, based on many conversations and posts in the Forum, plus prior wrenches and comments from staff, I think that many contributors believe that NP does not want contributors to copy and paste entire articles, nor does NP want entire stories higlighted (which is just the sneaky way of copying and pasting and putting it in a shaded box). Instead, NP has so far encouraged the use of highlighted excerpts plus original commentary, or full original commentary.

If this policy has changed, could you notify NP members? It would save a lot of confusion. If a new policy is already being implented by the actions of staff highlighting whole stories, or GS'ing copy and paste material, then it's a de facto new policy. Just let us know, please!

Rene has previously published on the music festival, per her link. Perhaps it would help this contribution if she linked to it, and provided commentary that this is part of an ongoing series. Do you agree?

And how do we differentiate between your objection to a post "focusing exclusively to a streaming-radio service" from a non-profit, public radio and staff support for posts that focus exclusively on commercial streaming material, such as cricket? Now, that's really confusing.

It was my opinion too that is was policy to not copy and paste entire articles from another site even if there is a link at the bottom of the post to the source. But I see that today such posts are now regarded as good stuff by staff. Perhaps it is time to do away with the highlight tool as it is not needed if work is good stuff that does not use it. I spent some of my own time trying to help a member in how to use the highlight tool only to be undermined by staff giving the same member good stuff flags for copying and pasting material from other sites.

well, this is one way to take comments way off subject.
