Gilbert Gottfried Tsunami Twitter Jokes Get Him Fired from Aflac Gig

Comedian Gilbert Gottfried sent out a series of jokes via Twitter in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of Japan. We're not sure what Gottfried was thinking, but the Twitterverse-- as well as the rest of the web-- was pretty pissed off.

Those who remember Gilbert Gottfried's 9/11 jokes know that he is no stranger to "too soon": his joke at the Friars Club roast of Hugh Hefner in 2001 was met with a chorus of boos.

Gottfried since deleted his tsunami jokes, but Google cache has a long memory: Gilbert Gottfried Twitter: cached version, and some screenshots are visible below.

Aflac Insurance, which does most of its business in Japan, has fired Gilbert Gottfried as the voice of its quacking duck. If you do a good duck voice... they're hiring.

I don't write this from a neutral standpoint: my response is all too public (and still published):

Looks like @RealGilbert didn't learn from his too-soon 9/11 jokes. "Relevance" & "being an asshat" are not one & the same, dude.
