The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Trailer (Rooney Mara & Daniel Craig)

The red-band trailer for the English-language remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, slated for a Christmas 2011 release, was leaked. Check it out below.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 2011 will hopefully do a better job of capturing the awesomeness of ~~Kalle Fucking Blomkvist~~ Michael Blomkvist. I'm also hoping that the American script will somehow avoid over-fetishizing Lisbeth Salander- she's an inherently unglamorous character, but early photos of Rooney Mara as the antisocial hacker looked a bit sexier than the books suggest.

We'll see if the new version of Dragon Tattoo gets it right, but the trailer looks pretty good, apparently addressing subplots skipped in the Swedish original. They have Lisbeth riding what looks like a Triumph Thruxton, rather than a customized 125cc: that gives her more of an off-the-shelf badass look, rather than highlighting her ingenuity.

Rooney Mara has a monumental task ahead of her in matching Noomi Rapace's performance as Lisbeth Salander: Rapace absolutely crushed it, nailing the character's stillness as well as her explosive tendencies. Daniel Craig has it a bit easier, since, while Michael Nyqvist did a good job in the original, the character of Blomqvist was criminally underwritten.

If there's one thing we can presume the English-language version will improve upon, it's the characterization of Michael, since it would be really difficult to write it worse: Nyqvist (through no fault of his own-- he performed well with what he had) was stuck playing a Kalle Blomqvist that was too goofy and emasculated for the narrative to support: audience members were left scratching their heads as to why he was such a feared journalist, and why someone like Salander would respect him.

Oh, and bring on Cecelia Vanger. You know what I'm talkin' about.
