Well this is a little odd. After all the press hullabaloo over whether Jay-Z would satisfy the guitar-loving Glastonbury crowd, and after Jay-Z's performance yesterday appears to have quelled all the doubters, organizers say they're going back to what they know and looking at either Coldplay or Radiohead to headline next year. Seems like they'd decided even before Jay-Z went on.

Glastonbury festival will "revisit its musical roots" next year with guitar-based bands returning to the headline slots. The move comes after the controversial decision to select the US rapper Jay-Z as the main headline act at this year's event.

Organisers are now considering Coldplay and Radiohead for next summer, bands that have delivered renowned festival performances.

The decision to abandon the experiment with more diverse headliners is likely to confound the music press, widely believed to have been won over by the rapper's show at the event. The hip-hop artist was warmly received by fans and sceptics alike yesterday.

The most talked-about headline act, Jay-Z, won over a massive crowd on Saturday night. Strutting on in an oversize jacket, scarf and customary shades, he commanded the stage, delivering track after track of explosive hip-hop. His energy was matched by that of the crowd who fulfilled all his requests for singing and "bouncing", even forming bling "diamonds" with their hands. His performance will go down in Glastonbury history.

A video was played before he came on, chopping between clips of his biggest critic Noel Gallagher and world leaders and members of the public apparently commenting, and then his touché launch into Oasis's "Wonderwall" which sent the crowd into giggles and an arm-swaying sing-a-long. He then put on his most serious scowl, saying: "I've got one thing to say," and the band erupted into "99 Problems". Performing several versions of well-known hits such as Rihanna's "Umbrella", and with his Linkin Park collaboration "Numb" as his encore, his rapping was compelling and masterful.
