Golden Girls actress Bea Arthur has died at the age of 86. She was most famous for playing Maude on the long-running series Golden Girls.
She died at her home early today from cancer.
The tall, deep-voiced actress won a Tony Award for the musical "Mame" and Emmy Awards for "The Golden Girls" and "Maude." Arthur's razor-sharp delivery of comedy lines helped make the sitcoms hits and turned the veteran stage and film actress into a popular TV star.
Her character Maude also appeared on 'All in the Family'.

Being a kid of the 80's meant a lot of TV watching - we never had babysitters. Beatrice Arthur's sharp wit and great style appealed to me from the very first time I saw her on Soap. Then there were the TV room arguments with my sisters over Three's Company versus reruns of Maude. I was confused but at the same time inspired by her character in Maude: educated, logical, emotional, witty, confident and single. Then came The Golden Girls - I was already hooked.
Later in life, I learned Bee Arthur worked very hard to create the archetypes she played and she did so with great integrity and comedy. I'd made a list of all the people I'd like to meet before I die, but I'd forgotten about Bee until just now. So long Bee and thanks for all the laughs.
