Hans Christian Ørsted gets a Google Doodle for his birthday... so, who is Hans Christian Ørsted (Oersted for those who haven't figured out to do that slashy "O")?
Glad you asked. Hans Christian Oersted (Ørsted for those who have found the slashy "O" on your keyboard) accidentally discovered the study of electromagnetism after noticing that a compass point would deviate from magnetic North and point toward a wire through which an electrical current was passing. It was an OMFG moment for science, and is forever commemorated by a Google Doodle.
Ørsted had proved that electricity and magnetism were connected and the study of electromagnetism was born.
The link above has an interactive version of the experiment, or you can just check the Google Doodle and get the overall gist. Your choice.
