Charllie Smith at the Georgia Straight penned a fascinating piece on the inner workings of Vancouver's left.  According to Smith it includes a powerful group he identifies as the Kingsway Mafia.

But first, it’s important to describe the politics of most of the members. The Kingsway NDP Mafia tends to be looser with public funds, less keen than other NDP members on environmental issues, and more strongly supportive of the labour movement and the wishes of the B.C. Federation of Labour.

If there’s one thing that binds the members of the Kingsway NDP Mafia, they side with labour leaders on issues of importance to the private-sector labour unions.

In the past, that has included lifting a moratorium on slot machines in the interest of job creation; supporting major construction projects like the Canada Line that create lots of jobs, lots of union dues, and lots of money flowing into the workers’ pension plans; and building social housing rather than employing tactics like rent supplements to make housing more affordable to the poor.

The tension within Vancouver's left between the new entrants who are drawn in for environmental reasons and the old guard who stand for labour is significant.  These two groups are often at odds but while the labour movement in BC and beyond becomes less relevant, green supporters are gaining influence.

I just got this comment in from the cross post on my blog:

"I must admit I know some of the people mentioned in this article and I also have met Charlie Smith and have to admit that I don’t think there is a word of truth in it.

I think Charlie has stitched together a story based on his fantasies. Most of these people he has a hate on for, and now has put them all in one article.

Charlie Smith is the same person who had the great insight to endorse Sam Sullivan for Mayor in the last election."
