Grey's Anatomy- Off I Go

The CW network is rumored to be developing a reality tv show inspired by the hit hospital drama Grey's Anatomy.

Something tells me that show depicting the all-too-real insides of an actual hospital's ER will be a lot less fluffy, comedic, romance-filled, and easily resolved in 44 minute episodes than a highly-scripted Hollywood series.

Real life has a way refuting the easy solutions and soft landings offered all too often by the conventions of television dramas.

Can you imagine broadcasting real people dying set to the tear-jerking syrupy soundtrack that is the show's signature?

The CW is developing a reality series in the same vein as Shonda Rhimes' hit ABC primetime soap.

I just got my hands on a casting notice that apparently has been sent to dozens of hospitals throughout the U.S.

Here's what they are looking for…

"Reveille and the CW would like to document the extraordinary experience of Emergency Medicine residents at a world-class hospital," the notice reads, in part.

"Residents are at an incredible personal crossroads as they complete their medical education. Those training in the Emergency Department face exceptional professional pressures as they work on the frontlines of the medical system. We would like to present a portrait of these hard-working physicians during this incredible period in their lives."

The notice also promises some great publicity for the chosen hospital.

"Our hospital partner on this project will have the opportunity to highlight their medical facilities, their world-class training program, and their service to the community on primetime network television," the notice reads.

So are you saying that real hospital interns don't spend all their days having illicit romances in the supply rooms?

A quick note to all those who think they want to watch real medical interns: you actually don't. Their day-to-day lives are hectic, boring to an outside observer, and involve tiny amounts of fitful sleep. Also thrown into the mix are clothes that smell like bodily fluids and cleaning agents.

Plus what about if they are trying to save someone's life and the camera operator gets in the way and that person ends up dying? It wouldn't look like such a good idea then.

Also, TV characters can compartmentalize and get it on in the call room, but in real life...  not so much.

This idea has been fleshed-out on the Learning Channel for years! This isn't new, and in fact, it hasn't been more popular for exactly the reasons Jordan and Amy suggest... these poor schmucks are tired, grey, stressed and underfed... they are under paid, under appreciated and under-whelmed with the level of success they've managed to reach after years and years and years of studying and sacrifice of their social and family lives. The actual 'action' and camaraderie is good to see, but hardly exciting; in my humble opinion, all it does is make you (the viewer) feel pretty lame for thinking that it would be entertaining to watch.

If I wanted to peer into this world where someone has to choose to shower OR eat OR sleep in order to make sure that they are available to pry bullets out of some career bad-guy... I'd rather see George Clooney do it while he's also getting it on with some cute intern.
