(Above Photo-LATE TOM MBOYA-asassinated in Nairobi's Tom Mboya back in 1969 for his eloquence in Politics.)
Kenya has a dubious reputation of silencing its most gifted politicians and cutting down their political ambitions in very brutal forms of asassinations.
By sheer coincidence, the Luo tribe from which the President-elect Barack Obama hails from has suffered more of these kind of political asassinations than any other tribe in Kenya.
Luos are very endowed in academics and the produce the best in almost all professions. Their sons and daughters form the cream of academia here in Kenya and abroad.
This has always been attributed to their staple diet which must be accompanied by fish on any given day. Fish, they say,is good for the brain development and living near Lake Victoria, they always have enough supplies of fish.
By their nature, they are also very eloquent and demostrative in politics.
They also come second in terms of kenyan tribal demographics after the Kikuyus.
The sad thing about the above statistics is that their potential, probably by political design has never been allowed to thrive in Kenyan politics as well as in the regional development in areas where they come from.
Luo Nyanza has among the highest poverty index levels in the country. There is also poor infrastructure in this region.
Reason?
The late Jomo Kenyatta's govt isolated the Luoland both in politics and development almost immediatelly after indipendence due to ideological differences between Kenyatta and his then vice President the Late Jaramogi Odinga who is the father to the current Kenyan Prime Minister,Raila Odinga.
Kenyatta professed capitalism as the way forward to Kenya's development after indipendence. Oginga Odinga, his Vice President was a self professed communist with openly manifested links with the the Soviet Union.
This disagreement came to a logical conclusion in 1966 when Odinga was removed as the vice president with the help Tom Mboya who was a crafty Luo and had issues with the strong influence of Odinga's political influence in Luo Nyanza which was stiffling his political ambitions to the Kenya's next President after the old sickly Kenyatta.
After helping Kenyatta remove Odinga from the political scene,Tom Mboya displayed open raw ambition to succeed Kenyatta by going for ground support thro campaign meetings which made him very popular with the masses out of his legendary eloquence which drew crowds whenever he went.
Kenyatta saw this as an open challenge to his leadership and Tom Mboya after helping kenyatta isolate Odinga was paid for his troubles with an asassins bullet in 1969 at a tender age of 30's and at the top of his political career.
So much to show for his political eloquence!
Another promising and politically eloquent politician to suffer the same fate under Kenyatta was the Late J.M Kariuki. This one was a young kikuyu who was fabulously wealthy and decided to set an example of distributing the wealth to the poor Kenyans by giving out chunks of his land to landless kenyans.
In doing so,he also challenged Kenyatta and his henchmen to do the same by distributing the land they had grabbed after indipendence to the landless freedom fighters who were feeling left out in sharing of national cake.
He traversed the breadth of the country preaching this worthy cause and drawing mammoth crowds.
Kenyatta again did not feel comfortable with this kind of eloquence and demostrativeness and J.M Kariuki was found brutally murdered by a Maasai herdsman in Ngong Forest near Capital city in 1975.
Kenyatta was now done with eliminating eloquent challengers in his rule and died peacefully in his sleep in August 1978.
Come the Moi era.
Robert Ouko, another eloquent and intelligent politician attends a UN conference with President arap Moi in 1990 in New York at the height of multiparty adventism in Kenya. The President is said to have been booed when he rose to address the session. But his foreign Minister received a standing ovation when he enticingly pleaded the Kenyan case on the floor.
Moi was not amused and when they flew back home,Oukos passport was detained in Nairobi airport.
Two days later, the foreign minister was reported missing only to be found brutally murdered near Kogello where Barack Obama's Kenyan family lives.
He paid the ultimate price for his eloquence in pleading Kenya's case at the UN session in New York when Kenya's image was stinking due to brutal crackdown on Multiparty activists.
Had Obama grown up in KENYA,he would have been too young to challenge Kenyatta's regime with his political eloquence, but tell me,would he have survived the subsequent regimes which also displayed total intolerance to his kind of political eloquence?
My take?
His political dream would have been dead and buried by now. God bless him!
