halloween reflections, savoring moments
I know of the Midwest US tradition of Halloween as a child and that of New Orleans as an adult. Children came up to my front door last night in their costumes, prompted by their mothers to say "trick or treat" in anticipation of receiving candy. I saw Robin Hood, princesses, Darth Vader, and butterlies. Bittersweet memories of my last call to my mother of 82 years two years ago was prompted by a young boy who said..."thanks, see you next year!" Every year, my tradition was to call home and talk to her on Halloween night during the candy-giving to hear her greet the children. It was her favorite holiday. She passed in May 2007. I savored that traditional call, and recalled the last one smiling.
