I don't get this. I saw Hancock last week, and it was thoroughly and undeniably average. And I'm not the only one underwhelmed--it garnered a measly 36% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 49 on Metacritic.

Yet despite all the luke warmness, the film has already grossed $107.3 million in less than a week, making it the second-best opening weekend ever for a Will Smith movie. What's going on here? Does the summer heat cause people to lower their standards?

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Will Smith's box-office superpowers remain intact. Smith's "Hancock" - the story of a boozing, foul-mouthed superhero who dresses like a street bum - led the Fourth of July weekend with a $66 million debut, according to studio estimates Sunday.

That raised the total for Sony's "Hancock" to $107.3 million since it opened Tuesday night to get a jump on the holiday.

It was a familiar place for Smith, one of Hollywood's most-consistent draws. "Hancock" is his fifth movie to open at No. 1 over the Fourth of July. The others were "Men in Black" and its sequel, "Independence Day" and "Wild Wild West."

Some notable reviews:
Any notions of demolishing black stereotypes -- and what else could have possessed Mr. Smith to do this? -- are dashed by the coarseness of it all, and by the narrative incoherence; a surprising plot twist turns a sloppy action-comedy into a totally different movie, and an even worse one.
From its opening shot of recalcitrant superhero John Hancock (Smith) sleeping off a permanent hangover on a Los Angeles bus-stop bench to its raggedy, barely explicable backstory, Hancock is a godforsaken (possibly literally) mess.
This movie fails so spectacularly - and on so many levels - that it's like watching a train plummet off a bridge.
In a summer when the broad deltoids of superheroes have been weighted down with the freight of existential despair (the Hulk is the new Hamlet; The Dark Knight the new Endgame) the timing seems perfect for a cynical, corner-cutting mess of a superhero like Will Smith's character in Hancock (Columbia Pictures). Alas, the movie is also a corner-cutting mess.
To be fair, though, not all reviews stank. Weirdly, The New Yorker loved it:
“Hancock” suggests new visual directions and emotional tonalities for pop. It’s by far the most enjoyable big movie of the summer.

Two words: "Smith" and "Will", not necessarily in that order. Despite the difference in how we watch movies, evidently a lot of people still go for the star vehicles. That aside, it's a really good idea for a movie, even though the execution isn't apparently 100%. (I've not seen it myself)

Rob Peters, I like this story. It's good stuff. Well presented & nice objective view. I have not seen it either and had reservations because of the previews (trailers). Now I question & wonder if I want to at all.

I would not pay to see this movie.  No interest at all.

Rob Peters, I like this story. It's good stuff. I like his work as an action hero and will go see it and judge it for myself/

This movie was a disaster. First A-list movie to star a black superhero and its totally stereotypical. Think about it. The first black superhero is a foul mouth, dirty, alcholic who is against almost against the justice system. And I'm not one to usually call out the race card but come on. Look at the other superheroes of the last 2 years. Look at their personas. Superman (nice guy with good job), batman (billionaire), Ironman (who I think was black in some of the comic books)(rich woman's man), spiderman (nice hardworking kid), hulk (genius), and then there is the alcoholic, socially inable superhero, HANCOCK.
I mean its just stereotype after stereotype. All the bad guys are either black or latin. Hancock is hated by society. He is attracted to a white woman who is better off with a whiteman because he would be her downfall. I mean the list goes on. Oh yeah.... AND WHAT SIMILARITIES DOES WILL SMITH HAVE WITH SOULJA BOY? Besides being African American.... I know this post will probably make me look like the Al Sharpton type, but thats totally not me. I don't usually pull the race card but come on...
