NP Rank:
Hand crank your media....
I think this is a way cool device, but note that it is still not available in online stores. So, I disagree that this would just be for extreme campers. Why not wind up for electric devices whenever and wherever you can? Certainly you could argue that the amount of energy any single individual would save is trivial. But this is like the "vampire" lights on all the devices in your house, where you can actually save money if you turn them all off. Hand cranking for media devices isn't about saving money or being able to take your media to some pristine natural spot where only an idiot would want to have multimedia. It is about taking tiny steps every hour, every day to save energy overall. That's the way those of us who remember Bucky Fuller and have read Amory Levins think. Think about it yourself.
The good: The Trevor Baylis Eco Media Player is a wind-up MP3 player that features video playback, a photo viewer, an FM radio, a voice recorder, a line input recorder, a text reader, expandable memory, and a flashlight. You can even use it to charge your cell phone.
The bad: The Eco Media Player is bulky, expensive, and includes only 2GB of storage. The music player does not support DRM-protected music, or ID3 tag sorting. Video playback is dim, and the screen is relatively small.
The bottom line: The Eco Media Player may be overkill for recreational camping, but it's a perfect boredom-buster for globe trekkers, extreme outdoorsman, or MacGyver.

biverson, in the struggle to change our consumer habits to be more efficient and economical (in the broad sense) it's exactly these small steps that will make the difference. This device may not yet meet the practical needs of consumers but it's a step in the right direction.

biverson, thanks for this. Fantastic idea...I'd like some hand-cranking electronics, myself. I'd feel better about the amount of time I spend sitting on my butt using them, that's for sure!
