The Hangover Box Office

It looks like this year's sleeper hit is Todd Phillip's The Hangover. Early Friday estimates indicate that despite tough competition from Pixar's Up and Land of the Lost it managed to come out on top. It grossed $17 million. Its weekend gross is expected to be near or above $40 million.

update 1: Friday gross is $16.5 million.

update 2: Weekend box office is $43.2 million. It is #2 for the weekend. It got out-grossed by Up which made $44 million. Close race.

update 3: Monday actuals are in and Hangover is #1. It grossed $45 million while Up grossed $44.3 million. It's rare for the weekend estimates to be incorrect, so this is good news for WB which has struggled this year.

update 4: Hangover continues to be the summer's biggest surprise hit. It was #1 all week and now it looks like it may dominate this weekend as well. Early Friday estimates say that it grossed $10.2 million. So, we're looking at about $30 million for the weekend. And its total gross should be $100 million by Monday. WB has already greenlit a sequel.

update 5: For the second weekend in a roll, Hangover is #1 at the box office. It grossed $33.4 million and has a total of $105.3 million.
