Hanoi, originally named Thang Long or "City of the Ascending Dragon”, was found in A.D. 1010 and located in the center of the Northern Delta, on the Red River. The name “Hanoi”, in fact, means "bend in the river" and denotes the city's strategic location along the vital waterway. Hanoi today has become the capital of Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Political - Economic - Cultural – Scientific and Technological center of the whole country. Along with HaTay province and a part of Hoa Binh province joining in Hanoi in the middle 2008, the city population increases to over 6 million people living on an area about 3,200 km2. With the convenient geographical location, Hanoi is considered to be the traffic clue of the road way, water way, rail way and air way from Hanoi to other provinces of Vietnam as well as to other countries in region and over the world, and the important economic and international transaction center of the whole country. In addition, Hanoi is the largest centre of education in Vietnam with more than 50 universities and colleges. Generally, Hanoi city is keeping the high pace of economic growth, stable political-social security.

As the capital of Vietnam for almost a thousand years, Hanoi has preserved many imprints of the past. Even though some relics have not survived through wars and time, the city still has many interesting cultural and historic monuments for visitors and residents alike, for example, the Temple of Literature (Quoc Tu Giam), the One - Pillar Pagoda, Old Quater and Ancient city. It is no surprise that Hanoi hosts more cultural sites than any city in Vietnam including over 600 pagodas and temples. As well, many traditional handicrafts are also being practiced in Hanoi including bronze molding, silver carving, lacquer, and embroidery.

Hanoi is also sometimes called “city of lake”. Hectares of lakes lie intertwined between the streets, the largest ones being Hoan Kiem Lake, West Lake, and Truc Bach Lake. Along with the dominance of French colonial architecture style in the city center, the beautiful cutural and historical monuments, Hanoi is considered to be one of the world's attractive and interesting cities.
