Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince earned an incredible $22.2 million at the box office on Wednesday, as the film opened at 12:01am in selected theaters for a series of midnight screenings.

The $22.2 million box office take at 3,003 screens is the biggest midnight box office gross of all-time.

Expectations are running high for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince which officially opens for widespread theatrical release on July 15, 2009.

That figure beats the $18 million earned in midnight runs by Warners’ very own “The Dark Knight” and the $17 million earned by 20th Century Fox’s “Star Wars: Episode III —Revenge of the Sith.”

“Half-Blood Prince” opens in the same Wednesday slot that “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” did in 2007. “Order of the Phoenix” grossed $12 million in midnight runs on its way to a $139.7 million five-day debut.

I'm an Australian librarian working in Samoa, and we just ran a Library Week. We had 500 Samoan children dressed up as their favourite book character parade through town with the US Navy band and the Samoan Police Band.

In the middle is Bailey, dressed as Harry Potter. He took out first prize in the best costume competition, and he is pictured here with his schoolmates.
