Harry Potter Themed Party Canceled Due to Warner Bros Copyright
Single mum and restaurant owner in Kilburn, London, was forced to cancel her Harry Potter themed dinner parties with butterbeer and cauldron cakes after Warner Bros sent her a letter and asked her to stop infringing on their copyright.
The woman, known only as `Ms. Marmite Lover`, wanted to serve dishes from the Harry Potter books such as chocolate frogs for two dinner parties, but Warner Bros says no. She has renamed the event `generic wizard / Halloween nights`after she took legal advice but she wonders if J.K. Rowling would approve or not.
"The night is totally a fan's tribute and is a one-off. It's not like I'm running a permanent Harry Potter restaurant," she said.
"It is basically dinner parties that are paid for. I'm the cook and hostess. Each dinner takes four days of work and I make very little money from it.
"I do understand people have to protect their copyright. But the difficulty is that Harry Potter is so popular it's now part of the culture. My daughter, 15, has been raised on Harry Potter and is obsessed.
As J.K Rowling was a struggling single mum once, Ms. Marmite Lover says she feels she would understand. She also brings up the point that not all of the dishes in Harry Potter were created by J.K Rowling so she shouldn`t have to change the name of the dishes.
She also wants to serve up miraculin powder, which makes sour food taste sweet, to add a touch of magic to the night.
She plans to go ahead with the parties and hopes Warner Bros will approve.
