Visitors bought more than 500 tons of fresh fruit during the first week of the HCMC Fruit Festival in Suoi Tien Park that opened June 1.

With the number of visitors increasing by 40 percent this year and trademarked fruits being sold at 20-40% below market price, the festival organizers expect to sell around 2,000 tons during the three-month-long event.

Meanwhile, Suoi Tien Park was conferred the State’s Labor Medal third-class. The VND2.5 trillion (US$154 million) facility, spread over more than 50 hectares in District 9, is one of the country’s leading tourist destinations, receiving 5 million visitors a year.

Elsewhere, more than 80,000 visitors attended the 2008 Mekong Delta Fruit Festival held at My Khanh tourist village in Can tho city from May 28 to June 2.

Around 100 tons of fresh fruit and 50,000 seedlings and ornamental trees were sold at the event.

Hundreds of fruit-processing companies, farmers, and dealers from the Mekong Delta and southeastern regions took part in the festival.
