Help fund a humanist school and humanists denied office
Africa, as you might be well aware, is full of religious extremism. In the northern part, it is more likely to be of the Islamic variety. In sub-Saharan Africa, it is more likely to be of the Christian sort. Uganda is an example of the latter. Uganda is a nation where there is a movement to execute gay men.
Indeed, there are connections between far right-wing Christian leaders and politicans in the U.S. and those in Uganda. While the Christian right-wing does not have the power as they do in Uganda to control and dominate society, they are still too powerful. Well, any power they have is too much.
Now, to be an atheist or a humanist in Uganda is very hard. You risk being killed by fanatics for even mentioning such a fact in the wrong company. But you can help work to support humanism in Uganda by contributing to build a humanist school in Uganda, named the Kasese Humanist Primary school. There is much more information on the link to the page of the Friendly Atheist, on this school.
If you might not be aware, humanism is simply the belief that society, institutions, morality and laws should be based on human reason and not the whims of some unseen and invisible god.
Also, there are no religious tests for office in the United States. But if you are a humanist and you want to be a chaplain in the military, Republicans in the U.S. Congress don't want you to join. They believe that you must believe in a god to be a chaplain. But should you?
There are Buddhist chaplains and most of them don't believe in a god or gods. Chaplains are not just religious clerics, they are also counselors.
They afford the opportunity for people to get counseling without having to schedule a visit to a mental health therapist, which can do on one's military record, and maybe be used to deny a promotion.
Lastly, this evangelical Christian published an e-book with the picture of the cast of Modern Family, a show that features a gay male couple. See, this author thought the image was in the public domain, which it wasn't and which he had no reason to believe that it had. So, he violated his religions prohibitions on theft (copyright) and sloth (laziness in fact checking.)
