Fallen soldier and former pro-football player Pat Tillman will go down in history as a true patriot, and a new book about his life due out September 15, 2009 will only secure that status. Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman will be on shelves less than a week after the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that inspired Tillman to give up a lucrative NFL career to go fight the war on terror.

Pat Tillman was an all-American icon even before he signed up to fight in Iraq. The handsome football player was living the dream when 9/11 shook the foundation of the United States. Inspired by the heroic deeds of his fellow Americans on 9/11 Tillman gave up football to do his part to combat terror, and he ended up paying the ultimate price.
On April 22, 2004, nearly two years after he joined the United States Army Rangers, Patrick Daniel Tillman was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan. His death sparked controversy and resulted in several military investigations. Tillman was the second pro-footballer to be killed in war; the first was former Buffalo Bills athlete Bob Kaslu who died in Vietnam in 1970.
Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman will reveal a previously untold story about this American icon. It contains very personal letters between Tillman and his wife Marie Tillman and suggests that he hated being the Army's poster boy for the war on terror. It is also expected that Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman will show that after serving several tours of duty in the Middle East Pat Tillman was becoming disenchanted with the war effort.
Like many other Americans, Krakauer admired Tillman's decision to give up his multi-million dollar football career to volunteer for military duty after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Once Krakauer started working on the book, he realized there was more to Tillman than football hero.
"Only then did I realize his depth and his complexity, and he was a really interesting guy," said Krakauer, who never met Tillman. "He was much more than a football player or a patriot or any of that. He was all those things. But he was a remarkable human being."
