Context is every thing. Hey Hey its Saturday was a great program for us to watch 20 years ago and the segment called red faces was aptly named. It was a talent quest in the show and you would see some really good acts and some really really bad ones, like the MJ send up. Kamal also appeared as a guest artist and coped his share of flak. We always expected to squirm at least once each week when the various acts would appear so welcome to the Hey Hey It's Saturday experience. I would love to see it on as a regular show again. And yes the segment was in bad taste but more a lampoon of racists and MJ rather than an attempt to denigrate any culture. We understand the damaged racism can do to communities and individuals and, like the rest of the world are constantly challenged to find ways of addressing the real issues like being aware of what are the acceptable norms in other countries.

I grew up watching "Hey, Hey It's Saturday" for years. It is a comedy show and used to be on Saturday mornings.Without fail, US judges would be startled by some of the acts and - what is missing here - the stuffed Ostrich named Ossie who co-hosted the show with Daryl Summers. What is also missing is Dickie Knees whom we only ever saw from the back. Dickie was a schoolboy (actually a mop with a wig and schoolboy's hat) who would pop up and make funny comments to the judges.Australians "send up" everyone, especially themselves. And yes, poor Kamahl took a ribbing..What did happen to him?Anyway, the Jackson Jive truly and most probably had no idea they were being racist. They were making fun of the Jackson Five, like the segment 'Red Faces' makes fun of everybody. 'Red Faces' is named for musician Red Symons, who is the curmudgeonly host. He was doing this schtick long before Simon Cowell, btw. Some of the acts on Red Faces were hilarious - there was a blonde who came on and did a dead cockroach. I supposed roaches should have been offended, though none spoke out.For me, it was nice to see Daryl, Red and the lovely Jackie McDonald reunited again. And I must say Daryl is a very nice man who meant no offense. I am glad he gave Harry Connick Jr. a chance to air his feelings.
