For three days, from Friday to Sunday, Feb. 22,  Dunlevy St. between Cordova and Powell by Oppenheimer Park was blocked to traffic.  That was so the Homeground Winter Festival "for Homeless and Underhoused Downtown Eastside Residents" could be held.

According to a report by one of the festival organizers, Carnegie Center Director Ethel Whitty, to the the Carnegie Board of Directors in 2008, this festival was a trial run for the Winter Oasis Festival intended to occupy the poor during the 2010 Olympics.  The Winter Oasis Festival was mentioned last year in a staff report to Vancouver City Council, as organizers were seeking a portion of the $1 million civic fund for Olympic social sustainability programs.

This weekend's festival was tainted by accusations of nepotism though.

"This weekend's festival was tainted by accusations of nepotism though."  haha! aren't they always. it's a shame. but, back in the real world, lots of people had fun at the festival, and that was the whole idea!
