homeless day 2

froze my butt off last night, and ran out of water, so i couldn't take a pain pill. i slept in forest land because the local cops questioned me about staying in the store lot.

today i had my orthoprdist appointment, and the news is not good. first off the swelling has not gone down enough to operate. 2nd, it will require surgery, a 4" plate and screws. while it was unwrapped, i snapped two pics of it, and the bad news is i can't get this laptop to recognize my cell phone so i can upload them to show you. he re-wrapped it with a new knd of splint that is more comfortable, and comes up higher to prevent arm turning. it is also meant to compress down the swelling. if it still isn't unswollen by monday at 1:30, no surgery. i am able now, to do finger clenches, which he said will help the swelling go down.

well so much for not giving up, i finally got this laptop to recognize my phone, so i have pics of my arm, and gas price pics.

i don't know why i didn't have any songs running through my head last night. i woke up at 1:30, in pain and cold. i got out my mp3 player and headphones and played some music. i found myself nodding off during songs. so i finally got the bed re-arranged to stay somewhat warm, and put the music away and dozed till 5:30 a.m.

i got up and drove into town and sat till time to go to the doctor. while i was there i installed that cell phone program and tried to get the phone to conect. i gave up till this evening.

at the doctors, i was telling someone in the waiting room about my situation. the lady i was talking  to left, and after i got into the exam room, the nurse comes in, hands me $2.50 and said this is from someone who was in the waiting room, who wanted to remain anonymous, who said she wished it was more but this was all she had on her. it was quite touching. there are still some good people out there.

the other thing that happened today is that for the first time, i ate something other than ritz crackers or maple scones. at the hospital cafeteria worker gave me two bowls of mixed beans. i knew it would give me gas, but i also knew my intestines were 99% empty, so i needed something else in me. then tonight my ex neighbor fixed dinner and gave me some. it is hard to eat anything but soft foods with no teeth, and the stuff he made was soft and good.

going into day 3, i can honestly i see mt town of 4000 in a new light. not necessarily a more positive light, but i actually got to sit on main street this morning and watch the town come to life. people scurring around to their otherwise boring existence. between 6 and 8, the traffic increased ten fold.

i decided to chance it and sleep again at the store parking lot. i laid down at 11, and tossed and turned till 1, trying to get comfy. i was also very short of breath for some strange reason. i decided to try falling asleep to music again and for a change i slept 5 hrs and woke to find my music player's battery died. it is charging again as we speak.

i'm quite shocked that i was not hassled last night. today is a doc appointment, and going to get a shower and change of clothes. i found out also that i may have some help on surgery day!!!

i hope this series will give the public a glimpse into what happens to some people who fall into foreclosure. it is not a pretty sight, but one can if they want to, remain positive and focused.

thanks to everyone for your comments.

Can your mobile phone do email? if so, email the pics to news*at*nowpublic.com, and we'll make sure it gets to the right story.

 Jim,

Lived homeless on the beach of Santa Monica During October/November of '76. No sleeping bag or anything and ate from a soup kitchen. Met some sonovabitches, but also discovered a couple of really wonderful people.

It would benefit you to see if a local church - am partial to the Unitarians myself - have a food bank, soup kitchen or whatever for you. Also, see if there are any local showering alternatives (I used to use a shower in a local rooming house when in CA.).

Keep writing and looking. Good Luck. M

no such facilities here, nor food unless you're 60 or older

master_jim2008, I like this story. It's good stuff. That part about the person in the waiting room was touching - I hope more people out there reach out to you.

Thanks for the update - our thoughts are with you.
