For the past several days there has been rumors surrounding a new Superman adaptation. Those rumors involve Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) playing the role of a mentor to his brother Jonathan, co-writer of The Dark Knight, whose set to make his directorial debut on the picture. Meanwhile, there has been reports that David Goyer (Blade, Batman Begins) is in talks to write the script.

We won't know if any of this is true till Warner Bros makes an announcement. However, we do know where the rumors originated; from WB itself.

It took the studio 19 years to release a follow-up to Superman IV: The Quest for Peace and that movie, Superman Returns, under-performed at the box office. So, now they want to create some positive buzz. Buzz is good, but what is important is the bottom line. Audiences want a good movie, so consider these advices:

  • No Origin. Everyone and their Grandmother knows the story behind Superman. So, there's no need to hit audiences over the head with it. HOWEVER, a backstory could be useful. So, an origin told in flashbacks that connects with the overall plot would be the way to go.

  • Investigative Reporter Clark Kent. If there's one thing that the `90s series Lois & Clark got right it was their depiction of Clark Kent as a reporter. Superman stops criminals. He doesn't prosecute them. Clark getting evidence and helping the District Attorney is part of the crime-fighting process. As for Lois Lane, her relationship with Clark is as important as the one with Superman. The more time they spend together the better.

  • Businessman Lex Luthor. No more real estate schemes. Please!

  • Action, Action, And More Action. Lex is a central villain in the universe, so he is needed, but a secondary villain, one that Superman could fight, is needed as well.

  • No Darkness. The Dark Knight was a hit, but so was Iron Man. Superman doesn't need to be gritty. Keep it light.

  • Truth, Justice, And Yes, The AMERICAN Way. When Superman made his debut in 1938 he stood up to corruption. He faught for the common man. Don't be afraid to show that. Don't be afraid to get political and show Superman stand up to corrupt politicans. Superman shouldn't be liberal or conservative. He should be a person who stands up for what's morally correct. You want audiences to "connect" to Superman? Then show that.

  • He's One Person. Superman is powerful, but he's only one person. So, he needs to INSPIRE not solve all problems. The people of Metropolis need their 15 minutes in the film.

CASTING SUGGESTIONS

  • Clark Kent/Superman - Matthew Bomer (White Collar, Chuck)

  • Lois Lane - Emily Deschanel (Bones)

  • Lex Luthor - Billy Zane (Titanic, The Phantom)

And hire Michael Giacchino (Alias, Lost, The Incredibles, Star Trek, Up) to do the score. No Hans Zimmer. Please!
