Ian McKellen describes anti-gay death threats
Apparently not getting the memo that Galdalf is immortal, some have sent death threats to openly gay film and stage star Sir Ian McKellen. In the article below, he touches upon those incidents as he describes his support for Gene Robinson, the openly gay US bishop who has been barred from an Anglican Church convention.
Sir Ian is supporting gay US bishop Gene Robinson, who has been excluded from an Anglican Church convention.
The American preacher has not been invited to the Lambeth Conference, held every 10 years, but has said he will be in Canterbury, where it is taking place, at the same time.
Sir Ian told the BBC that, like Bishop Robinson, he had received death threats - and argued that Britain was still intolerant of homosexuality.
"There are deaths in public places on the grounds that the victim is gay," he said.
"There is violence of language which can be related to violence in action."

jordan, I like this story. It's good stuff. It is awful that he has received death threats. Its outrageous actually since, apart from being openly gay and doing much for the lesbian and gay movement, he is a brilliant actor. I saw him twice in Bent (the story of homosexuals in a concentration camp). The tiny detailed improvements he made between the opening nights and later on were astonishing, at least they were to me.

I saw McKellen in Dance of Death in NYC... sheer magic.

Sadly, given Ian McKellen's longevity, he most likely has had more than a few experiences with those of that mindset.

It's staggering that Britain still has such homophobia, when so many of our most popular, best-loved, entertainers have been so obviously gay. You think we'd have gotten over it by now!

I just don't get death threats at all. He's gay - OK, so what? Conservatives, liberals, libertarians, performers, scientists, doctors, managers, a ton of people get them. It's just plain stupid. He has an opinion (that the Anglican Church should be OK with a gay bishop) - so be it. I disagree with his argument but I'm not going to write him a death threat - that would be ridiculous and, correct me if I'm wrong, I thought murder was also a sin. Maybe it's different in the Anglican faith.
