IKEA to Launch Leko Eco-Concept Car Made of Wood and Screws
There's an automotive rumor running around today and it's all about pairing assemble-it-yourself Swedish home furnishings and furniture manufacturer IKEA — with the launch of an eco-friendly compact concept car.
And, no, it probably won't be made of wood and screws.
But if the Swedish retail giant's microsite is to be believed, IKEA France is counting down the days until the launch of the first-ever IKEA Leko Concept vehicle.
"La voiture selon IKEA", which is scheduled to be unveiled on March 31, 2009 is allegedly "a modular design which can operate as a coupe or as a convertible, and has the full backing of the World Wildlife Fund France".
Can you take it home in a box and assemble it with a set of allen keys and some wooden pegs? Does it come stocked with Swedish meatballs and lingonberry jam?
You'll have to tune in (and tune up our Francais) to find out: roulez-leko.com

When you assemble it, there's that one little screw left over...

Model T's used to be shipped across country and put together elsewhere. I see this, and home food supply, as a trend.

Made out of Wood? Running on compressed Air? Well I joined the alert on the French web site.

A French designer has already designed the Air car. I've been wondering why it hasn't been released - when they said it would be out in 2009. It was shown at the New York auto show last year - fabulous looking and inexpensive!
Can you imagine how the auto industry would feel about that kind of competition - where they haven't got a hope!

To me as a French, LEKO sounds the same as " l'éco ", as in "économique" (inexpensive) and "écologique" (ecological). The flash filename is "covoiturage" (carpooling), a service that's already in place for some French IKEA stores' employees. There is no website or marketing for leko in any country besides France. So it's just a buzz marketing campaign for France, probably for an extension of the carpooling service to the customers.

Lek in Swedish means "play" so it may be a play thing.
Also very similar to "Lego" which in Danish is an abbreviation of "leg godt" meaning
"play well"
