Illegal Immigrant Activist Now Faces Deportation

Victor Toro seems an unlikely person for the role of immigrant activist. As an illegal immigrant himself, living in the U.S. after more than two decades, he has fought for illegal immigrants’ rights and even won a $50,000 award for his community service. The fate of those he fought for seems to have finally caught up to him as he now also faces deportation. To complicate matters, Toro is being sent back to his native Chile, the country he fled after being tortured by members of dictator Augusto Pinochet’s regime and where he is now officially considered “dead,” and therefore, outside the margins of the law.

"During more than two decades in the public eye, Mr. Toro was hiding his immigration status in plain sight, his lawyer said." New York Times, http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/11/nyregion/11activist.html
