Australia would tuck into lunch with a fair bit of relish after it ended the first session on 126 for two on day one of the first Test against India at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

David Warner (58 n.o.) and Shane Watson (28 n.o.) were the batsman at the crease. The duo added 54 runs after opener Ed Cowan (29) and Phillip Hughes (6) were dismissed. Off-spinner R. Ashwin claimed both the scalps in an 11-over spell that saw him toss the ball liberally on a wicket that offered much turn and bounce.

Warner and Cowan got the visitor off to a good start, with either batsman driving and cutting with ease. The runs came at a good clip; the team’s 50 was brought up in the 10th over. Warner was, however, lucky to be reprieved twice: Sehwag missed a sitter at first slip when he was on 18 while M.S. Dhoni couldn’t effect a difficult stumping after the batsman had scored nine more runs. Ashwin was the unfortunate bowler on both the occasions.

Cowan, who looked adept at negating the turn off the front foot, perished after he charged down to Ashwin. Dhoni did well to gather the ball and remove the bails. Hughes scratched around for a while before he played one onto the stumps. Watson and Warner, then, played out the rest of the session without any trouble. Harbhajan Singh, playing his 100th Test match, wasn’t very effective.

Australia: Michael Clarke (c), David Warner, Ed Cowan, Phillip Hughes, Shane Watson, Matthew Wade (wk), Moises Henriques, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, James Pattinson, Nathan Lyon.
