AUSTRALIAN captain Michael Clarke's sparkling 130 guided his side to a first innings total of 380 and a strong position on the second day at Chennai.
The skipper's phenomenal patience finally gave way after he and bowler Peter Siddle held out the Indian spinners for 90 minutes in the first session.
Clarke attempted to hit Ravindra Jadeja (2-71) over the long off boundary but miscued and was caught on the boundary.
The captain's 54-run partnership with Siddle followed a 151-run effort with Moises Henriques on the first day.
Clarke added 27 runs on the second day to take his career tally to 7119, enough to see him pass Greg Chappell (7110) after yesterday passing Don Bradman (6996).
This was his 23rd century from 90 Tests and continues a rare vein of form that began in the home series against the India in 2010-11.
Clarke was the highest run scorer in the game last year.
The Australian tail hung on for an extended 140-minute session, frustrating the Indian bowlers and adding a valuable 64 runs to the overnight score for the last three wickets.
The visitors' fast bowling attack will now have to do the job for their side after the two home pacemen failed to take a wicket.
India's obstinate resistance to the use of the DRS system continues to haunt them in this match. Clarke should have been given out when caught close to the wicket on 39 and a series of lbw appeals that appeared perilously close were turned down on the second morning.
Harbhajan Singh (1-87) may well find himself on report after a long and petulant exchange with 2012 ICC umpire of the year Kumar Dharmasena.
The cricketer, who has a history of disciplinary offences, believed he had James Pattinson LBW and stood nose to nose with the umpire for some time when his appeal was denied, he continued to remonstrate at over's end and was removed from the attack by captain MS Dhoni the next over.
Playing in his 100th Test after being dropped during the series loss against England, Harbhajan was eager to renew his role as chief tormentor of Australians but has bowled with little conviction.
He claimed his first wicket of the match with Peter Siddle (19) edging to slip soon after Clarke's dismissal. The bowler had survived 111 balls and 90 disciplined minutes at the crease.
Ravi Ashwin picked up tailender Nathan Lyon (3) to give him innings figures of 7-103.
