India will look to turn around their cricketing fortunes in a format in which they are world champions when they take on Pakistan in the first one-dayer on Sunday.
It is not often that India go into a home series with several question marks hanging over them, but the team's steady decline, highlighted by their first home Test series defeat to England in 28 years, has led to this situation.
They have, however, continued to be comparatively successful in ODIs and MS Dhoni's team will look to win the high-octane series to take the pressure off their backs in their preferred format.
This will be India's first ODI at home in well over a year - the last being the 4-1 series victory over the West Indies in Nov-Dec 2011 - and their first since record-breaking Sachin Tendulkar's retirement from this format of the game.
Since their astonishing World Cup triumph in 2011, India defeated West Indies both home and away, England 5-0 at home and Sri Lanka 4-1 away, but lost 0-3 in a five-match series on the tour of England and failed to make an impression in the triseries in Australia.
Calls for split captaincy in the longer and shorter formats of the game have been growing louder with India's dwindling fortunes and Dhoni and coach Duncan Fletcher can ill-afford a series loss to their arch-rivals.
At an individual level, the series appears to be crucial for the future of a few of the Indian players, and that certainly is the case for misfiring opener Virender Sehwag, who has been struggling for runs in this format since his record 219 last December.
With pacer Zaheer Khan opting out to get in shape for the home Test series against Australia in March, India's struggling bowling department wears an inexperienced look, although Bhuvneshwar Kumar's promising display in the T20s gives some hope along with the return of Ishant Sharma. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's loss of form is also turning out to be a cause for concern for India.
Pakistan, meanwhile, is bristling with talent and is bolstered by the experience of Younus Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq.
