iPhone 3GS Reviews: Hits Stores Tomorrow- Who's Waiting in Line?

Apple's iPhone 3GS hits the stores tomorrow... and the muzzle is off for reviews. Naturally, that means that the intertubes are clogged with a slew of iPhone 3GS reviews.

So, will iPhans be waiting in line for the 3GS like it was Stones tickets, or has queuing up for a phone already been played off?

According to engadget, the main changes are software-based, with only moderate boost from the new handset itself.

As we said in the opener, the 3G S launch isn't just about the hardware -- in fact, you could argue that it's hardly about the hardware. The biggest changes with this device really come in the form of software tweaks, and to a point, the software tweaks provided by iPhone OS 3.0.

Gizmodo is lauding the iPhone 3GS' boosted speed. Meanwhile, CNET likes it, but doesn't think it's as big a leap forward as the 3G was over its predecessor.

Also, some features, such as tethering and MMS, will be dock-blocked by some carriers (I'm lookin' at you, AT&T), so YMMV.

Things could be different this Friday for several reasons: Some current iPhone owners are being forced to wait to upgrade by their carrier; the hardware update isn't as dramatic as it has been in the past; and there's the possibility that the novelty of line-waiting has worn off.

So, ultimately, do you need to have the newest/shiniest/bestest new toy on the block, or are you content to upgrade the software (which is not without its hiccups) on the toy you already have? That, methinks, will dictate your willingness to stand in line with a bunch of fanboys.

I feel sorry for those poor fella's waiting in the rain in front of the apple store on 5th avenue.  They'll be heartbroken to know they wont be the first to have the phone.  Apple employees are allowed to setup their own personal phones starting at 6 a.m.
