IPL 2013 Video Highlights: Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians
In another grandstand finish in Chennai on Saturday, the Mumbai Indians hung on for a nine-run victory over the Chennai Super Kings. A magnificent final over from Munaf Patel saw his team home after MS Dhoni had seemed to be leading his team to victory.
Dhoni seemed impervious to the loss of wickets at the other end, and some huge hits brought the Super Kings to the point of needing twelve in the final over. With Dhoni on strike, this seemed quite possible, particularly as the first ball sped towards the mid wicket boundary.
However, Pollard pulled off a brilliant catch to dismiss Dhoni for 51, made off 26 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes.
Ankit Rajpoot, in his IPL debut, could only play one scoring shot for two off the remaining five balls as Patel kept it short.
Pollard had a Jekyll and Hyde evening. He pulled the Mumbai Indians out of a desperate position at 83-6 after 12 overs earlier, striking an unbeaten 57 off 38 balls with 4 fours and 5 sixes. However, he proceeded to give away 40 runs in his spell of bowling.
Pollard bowled the 18th over with Chennai needing 40 off 18 balls. Dhoni climbed into him with a vengeance, hitting him for 6-4-4, interspersed with some wides. He did tighten up at the end, bowling Ben Laughlin, but the 17 conceded in the over gave the momentum back to the Super Kings.
Chennai, as did Mumbai, made an indifferent start to their innings. Wickets fell at regular intervals, and the tight bowling of Pragyan Ojha, who took 2-16, and Harbhajan Singh put the brakes on and led to some false shots.
Patel finished with the bowling honours with figures of 3-29.
Apart from Pollard's heroics with the bat, Denesh Karthik had a brief cameo of 37 off 25 balls and Harbhajan Singh contributed an unbeaten 21 in a partnership of 65 with Pollard after Ricky Ponting had won the toss and chosen to bat.
Pollard was named man-of-the-match.
