Is it time for the Catalan media to go back to school?
I’ve been reading with interest what’s been happening this week in Cataluña regarding the…ahem language spoken by the Catalan media. The Periódico de Cataluña gave us an insight this week into the right and wrong way of pronouncing certain Catalan expressions which are used on a daily basis on TV3 et al.
Now I understand that the original plan to penalize the newsreaders and reporters has been dropped by the IEC and instead they are “exigiendo un buen nivel lingüístico a los periodistas”. What a joke. How are these periodistas to be looked up by ordinary folk who may not posses a Nivell C or D certificate? I think you would expect the Catalan media of all people to be able to speak their own language, wouldn’t you?
Seems to make a whole mockery of it all, doesn’t it? So if only a small percentage of people in the region of Cataluña - 25% according to The Economist use Catalan, my question is; how many of those use Catalan to a decent standard? The mind boggles!
