Jack Reacher Trailer: Will We Buy Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher?
Tom Cruise Horribly Miscast as Jack Reacher
The trailer for Jack Reacher is online, and has so far been met with skepticism at best, open derision at worst. Jack Reacher is featured in 18 different novels since 1997, and has had time to build a fervid and opinionated fan base.
The biggest issue is casting. Lee Child's Jack Reacher is 6'5", 250 lbs. Tom Cruise is nearly a foot shorter and far lighter. Reacher is supposed to be scarred. Tom Cruise is... pretty.
The problem with A-list star vehicles is that they're A-list star vehicles. Story is even more of distant second-place than normal. Studios are yet to learn that casting a known quantity does not a blockbuster make. Rock of Ages, anyone?
Actors better-suited for the role include:
- Daniel Craig (matches Childs' description of Reacher almost exactly)
- Ron Perlman
- Hugh Jackman
- Tom Hardy (Hey, he's the new Max Rockatansky)
- Clive Owen
- Josh Holloway
It's not just about appearance: Tom Cruise does action very well (MI: Ghost Protocol was a superb action/adventure flick), but he just doesn't exude badass in the same way as the actors above.
The overall vibe of Jack Reacher (the movie) comes across as Drive meets The Losers. Indeed, the similarities of some of the shots to those in Drive are remarkable. In fact, Jack Reacher looks like the sort of movie that Drive almost became before Nicolas Winding Refn cast Ryan Gosling in the lead role.
Enough from us, though: what do you think? Would you see Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher?
