Polish off your chopsticks. A new generation of karate kids will be mentored by the beloved martial arts movie star Jackie Chan.

Jackie Chan is in negotiations to star in the remake of 1984 hit movie The Karate Kid, according to reports.

Chan will play the role of Mr. Miyagi, who mentors a bullied boy and teaches him karate, as well as how to stand up for himself.  Jaden Smith, son of Will and Jada Pinkett-Smoth will play the boy.

They will begin filming in Beijing next year.

It will be hard to beat the original.

I'm so mad they're doing this. This film will do nothing except taint the name of a classic. Hollywood needs to quit trying to remake timeless classics. 99% of the time the new one is worthless.

Although I am a Jackie Chan fan, and I understand his being the choice, due to his recent popularity and all ....

However, this sort of hints of the thinking that 'any Asian will due' for casting.

I'm not sure how old he is but, what about Sonny Chiba? He's of Japanese descent. Even if he's old, wasn't that Mr. Miyagi's hook? The wise old sage?

Mr. Chiba was last seen as the maker of steel in Kill Bill II (I think it was II.).
