So far the actors have raised $5,000 but they need about $25,000 more according to Vanessa Marquez who appeared in the film.

"Stand and Deliver" dramatized the story of how Garfield High School math teacher Escalante turned a group of no-hoper students into calculus champs.

Edward James Olmos played Jaime Escalante in the film, which also featured Lou Diamond Phillips and Andy Garcia.

Because Escalante was a retired teacher he has the best insurance, but he chose to try alternative, unproven methods for his cancer, and that is why he's going broke paying for it himself because the insurance companies won't cover it. It is so unfortunate that so many Americans can not even get basic medical care, let alone alternative therapy. That is why we must pass universal health care.
