I've been a huge fan of this rice paddy art project for a long time - as usual the amazing Pink Tentacle has the latest on the enterprise. This year there has been controversy because rather than being 'art for art's sake', the project producers took sponsorship from JAL.
Has Japan Airlines’ crop-based advertising gone too far? For some residents of Inakadate — a small town with a big reputation for cultivating fantastic works of multi-colored rice paddy art — the answer is “yes.”

Nope. They already has the agreement with JAL. Its good to make some money to offset the cost. what wrong about it? What wrong if it goes commercial, the profit goes to the local people, and it can be channel to local school etc etc.
