James Franco Signs Book Deal to Publish Short Story Collection

Actor James Franco is not only one of Hollywood's leading young actors, he is also an aspiring author.

According to publishing house Scribner, who just signed Franco to a book deal for a recently completed collection of short stories, he is also "a surprising and powerful new literary voice".

Not content only to work his acting chops, in between shooting huge Hollywood films like Milk, Pineapple Express, and the Spider-Man franchise, Franco is continuing with an M.F.A. degree at Columbia University.

A title and release date for the collection of stories has not yet been set.

Fresh off the success of Milk and Pineapple Express, James Franco recently got a different career boost, landing a publishing deal with Scribner, an imprint of publishing great Simon & Schuster.

Today, new details were released about the deal and Franco's collection of short stories.

"Amy Hempel [a writer at Brooklyn College who Franco has worked with over the years] told be about the stories last fall, and I was delighted when Richard Abate [Franco's literary agent] sent them to me," says Nan Graham, editor-in-chief of Scribner. "The sense of place in Palo Alto is immediate- both claustrophobic and ominous...He is a surprising and powerful new literary voice.
